The Lowcountry Estuarium . . . Programs & Events

Though our Paris Ave. facility has been closed we are pleased to announce that beginning Monday, November 21st the public will be able to visit the interim home of the Estuarium's creatures. For the near future they will reside in the art gallery of the Estuarium's curator, Bob Bender, at 630 16th St. Ext. in Port Royal. Visitation is available seven days a week by APPOINTMENT ONLY by calling 843-524-6600 or 843-263-7969 or email estuarium@islc.net. And yes, the critters will be fed during your visit. There is no fee but donations will be greatly appreciated. Look for our new website with several new features coming soon.

Programs & Events at the Estuarium

As a learning center, the Lowcountry Estuarium wants to showcase the unique and special organisms and habitats found in the Lowcountry.

Some of the ecosystem exhibits include: Diamond back terrapin habitat - Habitat for several species of crabs - Game fish habitat - Food web interactions - Estuary awareness

Students can feel comfortable to come, visit, interview staff for science projects, and learn to respect and take care of our unique ecosystem. The Lowcountry Estuarium aims for happy interactions between Lowcountry creatures and people.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

The Lowcountry Estuarium specializes in educational programs geared towards school groups and general public groups. Programs are available for all types of groups ranging from primary and secondary schools to Elderhostel groups. The program content and length will be specially designed to meet the curriculum and learning needs of your group.

  • ♦ Visit to Port Royal’s "The Sands"
  • ♦ Tour of the Shrimp Dock at Port Royal Seafood
  • ♦ Combination of above tours
  • ♦ Traveling Aquarium: The Lowcountry Estuarium comes to you with this hands-on outreach program that delivers age appropriate instruction that meets required SC Science Standards to schools in Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton & Colleton Counties.
  • ♦ Beach-in-a-Bag: Estuarium trained presenters lead students on a tactile adventure to learn about the critters found along the beaches of the SC coast. Program is given in the schools and meets required SC Science Standards.
